What do I do when I leave the dentist after an extraction?
Below are the steps that you can follow to help reduce pain, bleeding and promote healing
- Keep the gauze swab (where used) in place with pressure for approximately 20 minutes after leaving the surgery.
- Avoid strenuous exercise today and if pain is intense rest with head raised.
- Where advised, take 2 panadol or panadeine tablets immediately after treatment or when advised, then every 2-3 hours as necessary to a maximum of 8 tablets in one day.
- FOR THE REST OF TODAY avoid extreme HOT, very COLD food and liquids. Do not drink alcohol or smoke today.
- Wait 1 hour before eating or drinking. From tomorrow onwards there are no restrictions on food and drink.
- If bleeding recurs, which can occur when the local anaesthetic wears off, apply pressure with cotton gauze or clean tissue for approximately ten minutes. Where significant bleeding continues please contact our surgery or the local hospital.
- From tomorrow, (NOT TODAY) gently rinse your mouth with a mug of luke warm water mixed with one teaspoon of salt. Rinse three times a day for seven days. Use the whole mug full of salty water each time you rinse. This is very important.
